Season on the line, again, right here.

HOKA HEY

Sunday, November 25, 2012

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

NFL week 11: Ravens at Steelers

Byron breaks some ribs as the Steelers successfully pull off Operation Instill False Sense of Confidence. Advantage bumblebees.

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

NFL week 10: Chiefs at Steelers

Ben separates his shoulder, Wallace catches a TD with his knees, and the Steelers move one game closer to yet another Super Bowl Championship.

Sunday, November 04, 2012

NFL week 9: Steelers at Giants

The refs are beating the Steelers 14-10 at halftime.

Sunday, October 28, 2012

Sunday, October 21, 2012

NFL week 7: Steelers at Bengals

As the Bucs rest during their bye and watch the Cards-Giants game 6, the Steelers warm up for their playoffs by thrashing the Bengals.

Saturday, October 06, 2012

MLB Playoffs

While the Pirates enjoy their first-round bye, other teams play on.

In the lower league, it's hard not to root for McLouth and the Prison Baller.

Wednesday, October 03, 2012

Game 162: Braves at Pirates

Sheets and Burnett in a thrilling finale. Starts in about an hour.

Tuesday, October 02, 2012

Game 161: Braves at Pirates

Hansen and Correia at seven.

We have an exciting new offer here at HW. You can enjoy this new HW++ paywall-free on a limited-time basis. The big spike in ad revenue is fully funding Rowdietta's college fund.

Monday, October 01, 2012

Game 160: Braves at Pirates

Maholm and Locke at seven.

Like most Pirates sites, we've been crushed with all the season-ending celebratory traffic.

Haloscan's down. Forever I guess. A moment of silence for all the lost comments.

We have them archived (I think). Perhaps there is some way to migrate them into some new commenting system.

For now it looks like we are running with these Blogger comments. Maybe.

Saturday, September 29, 2012

Game 158: Reds at Pirates

Bucs win another laugher as they mostly rest up for the long playoff bye.

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Game 156: Pirates at Mets

Bucs win again as they coast towards their first round playoff bye.

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Game 155: Pirates at Mets

Down 5-0 in the fourth.

Let's drink to all these guys.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Game 154: Pirates at Mets

Looking around the league, I see Jeff Keppinger homering in a meaningful baseball game. About eight years ago, the Pirates traded that guy with a damn good bunter for Jose Bautista and Ty Wigginton. Other former Pirates, now playing meaningful baseball: Ryan Vogelsong, Frodo McLouth, and the Prison Baller, Brandon Moss. The last two players have been en fuego as their teams push for a Wild Card berth.

Best of luck to these gentlemen.

Monday, September 24, 2012

Game 153: Pirates at Mets

Huntington explains the Pirates lose because too many have gone into "Survivor" mode. I am curious which players, exactly, are guilty of not bunting runners over when ordered to do so.

Sounds like Lord of the Flies in the clubhouse. That might explain the Eagle I mean Boy Scout training regime.

Sunday, September 23, 2012

NFL week 3: Steelers at Raiders

Steelers up 14-7 in the second quarter with the Raiders driving.

Game 152: Pirates at Astros

I think I saw Hurdle last night, day-dreaming away in a Hippie sweat lodge. Look for new, creative defensive shifts from the brotherhood.

Doesn't matter who the pitchers are. Game on pretty soon.

Saturday, September 22, 2012

Game 151: Pirates at Astros

HOKA HEY. It's a good day for a kick in the balls.

Correia and Keuchel at seven.

Friday, September 21, 2012

Game 150: Hells Angels at Astros

Pirates to take the field as a brotherhood, carrying a telephone pole.

Locke and Gonzalez will be the starting pitchers, at eight.

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Game 149: Brewers at Pirates

Another kick-in-the-crotch loss for the languorous PBC.

Zoltan, why hast thou forsaken us?

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Game 148: Brewers at Pirates

Pirates are down 2-0 in the fifth, with Chris Resop pitching to Aramis Ramirez in a bases-loaded situation.

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Game 147: Brewers at Pirates

Gallardo and Burnett at seven.

Burnett has pitched well in September, despite the 0-2 record.

Beer fort amply supplied with Young's Double Chocolate Stout.

Prepare to untuck.

Monday, September 17, 2012

Game 146: Pirates at Cubs

Correia and Wood at eight.

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Game 145: Pirates at Cubs

Cubs up 1-0 in what will continue the Pirates' winning streak.

Saturday, September 15, 2012

Game 144: Pirates at Cubs

Wandy and Berken in a day game. Nineteen game win streak starts now.

Friday, September 14, 2012

Game 143: Pirates at Cubs

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Game 141: Pirates at Reds

Reds up 2-1. Game is ON.

Monday, September 10, 2012

Game 140: Pirates at Reds

Rodridguez and Latos starting soon.

Sunday, September 09, 2012

NFL week 1: Steelers at Broncos

Steelers travel to the scene of the nightmare to take on the Broncos, who were decimated this offseason by the defection of Tim "Steeler Killer" Tebow.

Game on at 8:20. Beer fort swept clean and re-stocked in anticipation of a full twelve hours' lending my will to victories.

Game 139: Cubs at Pirates

Rusin and Locke at 1:35pm.

To clinch the Pirates need some combination of ten eye-gouging bunts and/or run-reducing defensive shifts.

Saturday, September 08, 2012

Game 138: Cubs at Pirates

I was up until 5 am drawing up new defensive shifts involving Holt and Walker. After I study them some more, I plan to draw the better ones on the back of a postcard and mail them in to Hurdle. Can't hurt, right?

Tonight we are looking at Ferd and McDonald at 7pm.

Friday, September 07, 2012

Game 137: Cubs at Pirates

Burnett and Kerry Wood tonight at seven as the Bucs try to bunt their way into the playoffs.

Wednesday, September 05, 2012

Game 136: Astros at Pirates

Bucs win another, 3 bunts to 0.

In the 2012 PBC World Champions DVD, this bunting barrage will feature centrally in the early September comeback montage.

Tuesday, September 04, 2012

Game 135: Astros at Pirates

Lyles and Wandy at 7.

Astros are here at just the wrong time ... after dropping four straight, the last thing the Pirates need are more lessons in How Not to Play the Game Right.

Monday, September 03, 2012

Game 134: Astros at Pirates

Locke and Gonzalez starting soon.

For the playoffs, the Bucs need more Labor than Languor.

Sunday, September 02, 2012

Game 133: Pirates at Brewers

McDonald and Gallardo starting now.

Iowa Pirate is sitting behind the Bucs' bullpen, waiting to untuck.

And so began the Brock Holt Era.

Saturday, September 01, 2012

Game 132: Pirates at Brewers

Burnett and Estrada at seven.

Untucking around nine-thirty.

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Game 131: Pirates at Brewers

Karstens and Rodgers at 7.

This would be a good night to unveil some new, aggressive defensive shifts.

Prepare to untuck.

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Game 130: Cardinals at Pirates

Kelly and Wandy at 7.

Pirates need to reach back and be the better team they imagined in the pre-season. Yessir, it's time to bunt somebody's eye out.

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Game 129: Cardinals at Pirates

Westbrook and McDonald at seven.

Would be a good time for McDonald to throw that no-hitter.

Monday, August 27, 2012

Game 128: Cardinals at Pirates

Burnett and Lohse at seven.

Pirates got to bunt them down, get back on that 100-win pace.

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Game 127: Brewers at Pirates

Bedard and Rogers underway and free today on mlb.tv.

Saturday, August 25, 2012

Game 126: Brewers at Pirates

Marcum and Karstens at 7.

It's my hunch that Takahashi shoots a mean clay pigeon.

Thursday, August 23, 2012

Game 125: Brewers at Pirates

Pirates come home to lick their wounds.

Fiers and Wandy, standing up straight, at seven.

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Game 124: Pirates at Padres

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Game 123: Pirates at Padres

Burnett thinks Marquis and the Padres need to STFD.

Monday, August 20, 2012

Game 122: Pirates at Padres

One of the AAA starters, probably Wilson or Leroux, will likely get the call against Volquez tonight. Bucs need a win for the playoffs.

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Game 121: Pirates at Cardinals

Karstens and Garcia starting soon.

The PBC 2012 World Champions DVD will feature a segment where they reenact the critical turning point of Tabata's bus (limo?) ride from Indy to St. Louis, where he returns to lead off and start in LF today.

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Game 120: Pirates at Cardinals

Bedard and Lynn today at four.

Late afternoon start leaves plenty of time for Bucs fans to buy their World Series tickets, which are finally on sale.

Friday, August 17, 2012

Game 119: Pirates at Cardinals

McDonald and Westbrook tonight at 8:15.

Some meaningful bunts could put the Bucs one step closer to a first-round playoff bye.

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Game 118: Dodgers at Pirates

Burnett and Blanton at four.

Bucs are 36 games away from another 100 win year.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Game 117: Dodgers at Pirates

Wandy and Kershaw tonight.

When we watch the 2012 world champion PBC DVD in 7 months this part of the season will be the dramatic lowpoint, where the camera goes sharp to blurry and players, bat on shoulder, look out in the distance a la 1000 yd stare, THEN, the dramatic, uplifting music begins...and so the push starts.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Game 116: Dodgers at Pirates

Correia and Billingsley tonight.

Bucs are five games back and 1.5 games up in the wild card race. Bucs need some bunts to regain momentum.

Monday, August 13, 2012

Game 115: Dodgers at Pirates

Karstenstein vs. the Harangutan tonight.

Given the match-up, fans with small kids should probably just listen to this one on the radio. Bucs need a win.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Game 114: Padres at Pirates

Bedard and Ross Ohlendorf today as the Bucs try to get back on track for a first-round playoff bye.

Saturday, August 11, 2012

Game 113: Padres at Pirates

Burnett tries to stop the languor before fireworks and Styx.

Friday, August 10, 2012

Game 112: Padres at Pirates

J-Mac and Volquez tonight in another must-win game with playoff implications.

Thursday, August 09, 2012

Game 111: Diamondbacks at Pirates

Wandy and Saunders today at four with a first round playoff bye at stake.

Reds play in Wrigley at eight.

Wednesday, August 08, 2012

Game 110: Diamondbacks at Pirates

Correia and Kennedy tonight with the World Series parade in the balance.

Reds play the Brewers in a day game.

Tuesday, August 07, 2012

Game 109: Diamondbacks at Pirates

Karstens and Corbin with the division on the line.

Monday, August 06, 2012

Game 108: Diamondbacks at Pirates

Bedard and Miley at seven in another must win game.

Sunday, August 05, 2012

Game 107: Pirates at Reds

Game on now.

Progress of the series so far emphasizes the need to win the division outright.

Saturday, August 04, 2012

Game 106: Pirates at Reds

McDonald and Leake tonight in the most important game of the year.

We gonna get down. We gonna do the do.

Friday, August 03, 2012

Game 105: Pirates at Reds

Wandy and Latos starting soon in the most meaningful series in twenty years.

Wednesday, August 01, 2012

Game 104: Pirates at Cubs

Karstens and Wood this afternoon.

Wood is a lefty, so I am curious if we will see Good Pedro (day splits) or Bad Pedro (lefty splits). Probably depends on which way the wind is blowing.

Pirates need to get this win. Day off tomorrow and then twenty games in a row, starting in Cincinnati.

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

Game 103: Pirates at Cubs

Burnett and Dempster tonight at eight.

Pirates need to shake off all those bad habits they picked up in Houston. It's a real danger playing hapless teams ... playing down to the competition is not how the Pirates will win another championship.

Fortunately the Cubs have been playing well since about when they promoted Rizzo -- I count 18-10 in that department -- so it should not take too long for the Pirates to re-learn how to play the game right. The problem will be if they lose too many games in the meantime.

Pirates acquire Travis Snider

Snider's another left-handed bat with power and not so much bunting credentials.

Monday, July 30, 2012

Game 102: Pirates at Cubs

Bedard and Germano at eight.

Pirates need a win.

Sunday, July 29, 2012

Game 101: Pirates at Astros

McDonald and Harrell at two.

McDonald has not pitched so well in July and needs to dominate this hapless Astros offense.

Saturday, July 28, 2012

Game 100: Pirates at Astros

New acquisition Wandy Rodriguez starts tonight against Andres Galarraga Jr. and the hapless Astros.

Clearly a must-win situation for the Pirates. The MLB playoff structure heavily favors division winners this year.

Astros have lost eleven in a row. You'd think they'd be desperate for a win, but nooo, apparently this is not the case.

Browns

Good on the Steelers for signing Antonio Brown long term. Mike Wallace has overplayed his hand. I'm not sure what will come of him, but I do not despair of losing him to either cowardly play in 2012 (does he think he will die before the end of this season?) or some kind of trade/holdout.

Also entertained that a die-hard Steeler fan is going to buy the Cleveland Browns. That's committment, right there.

Friday, July 27, 2012

Game 99: Pirates at Astros

Karstens and Lyles on central time.

Not excited about the idea of trading Kevin Correia, who has won seven of his last ten starts. Starters don't go on trees and a team always needs more starting pitching than most expect.

Anyway win meter humming happily. New picture for the beer fort wall.

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Game 98: Pirates at Astros

Burnett and Keuchel tonight at 8.

Two and a half games out of first, the Pirates are literally chasing the Reds, who leave Houston happy.

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Game 97: Cubs at Pirates

Getaway day underway. Dempster and Correia dueling; Blatz fumage in the home plate area.

Cubs up on a Frank Rizzo home run.

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Welcome Wandy

Pirates acquire longtime Pirate-killer Wandy Rodriguez.

One less hap for the hapless Astros.

Game 96: Cubs at Pirates

Maholm and McDonald at seven.

Pirates are 54-41, a game and a half back of the Votto-less Reds.

Facing a pitcher with a pedigree like Maholm's, the Pirates might be fortunate to scratch out two infield hits. McDonald will need to bring his A game.

Monday, July 23, 2012

Game 95: Cubs at Pirates

Bedard and Samardzija tonight.

Just a half game back, the Bucs need wins against the hapless teams.

Sunday, July 22, 2012

Game 94: Marlins at Pirates

Anibal Sanchez and Jeff Karstens in an hour.

Pirates are 53-40, 1/2 game out of first. Last year on this day they were 51-46 and one game out.

Kids run the bases after the game.

Saturday, July 21, 2012

Game 93: Marlins at Pirates

Big A.J. vs. Lil' Z for the win.

Friday, July 20, 2012

Game 92: Marlins at Pirates

Correia vs. Nolasco tonight. Bucs need a win for a chance at first place tomorrow.

If the Bucs trade for a Drew or Scutaro or other upgrade at SS, Barmes could start in RF.

Thursday, July 19, 2012

Off day

No game today. Bucs are tied for first, with the Reds hosting the D-backs today.

Preparation for the postseason should not involve rest, but instead extra batting practice and maybe even a buntathon.

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Game 91: Pirates at Rockies

J-Mac and Guthrie in a must-win day game. Hopefully some of the infielders can run around in the outfield today.

RF prospects

Quickly looking through the minors for utility infielders who could start in right field, it's clear that Altoona is the first place to look, with an impressive and affiliate-leading 54 bunts. However, closer inspection reveals Cumpton bunting his ass off is in part responsible, with a jaw-dropping 8 SH in only 25 PA. He's a pitcher though, not a utility infielder.

Benji Gonzalez in Bradenton is the obvious choice, leading the minors with 9 SH while playing 2B/SS/3B, so probably ready to jog out into RF and learn on the job.

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Game 90: Pirates at Rockies

Bedard and Friedrice tonight.

Bucs need a win to drive away the creeping languor.

Monday, July 16, 2012

Game 89: Pirates at Rockies

Karstens and Francis tonight.

The Bucs need to bunt and trade their way back into first place.

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Game 88: Pirates at Brewers

A. J. Burnett and Gallardo at two.

Here's hoping that Larry Vanover excused himself from last night's Blatz party.

Saturday, July 14, 2012

Game 87: Pirates at Brewers

Correia and Estrada at seven.

A lot of hand-wringing about last night's bloodbath, but any team will lose a game like that, here and there, so there are no worries in the beer fort.

Prepare to untuck.

Thursday, July 12, 2012

Game 86: Pirates at Brewers

McDonald vs. Greinke tonight, if Zack can avoid getting ejected.

The Bucs are only one game up, so to stay in first place and continue their first half momentum, they really need to win this game.

Monday, July 09, 2012

All-Star break

All but two of the Bucs rest while Cutch assures home-field advantage for the Bucs in the World Series. Then Hairyhands will probably try to give it away.

The Home Run Derby would be more entertaining if it was just one of many contests of baseball prowess. Like a bunting contest (or marathon). And synchronized defensive shifts involving whole infields and/or outfields, set to music.

Sunday, July 08, 2012

Game 85: Giants at Pirates

Burnett vs. the Freak today.

Despite the calming influence of Vogelsong, the Freak Whisperer, Timmy has been a wreck this year. Bucs need a win to carry momentum and sole possession of first place into the All-Star break.

Saturday, July 07, 2012

Game 84: Giants at Pirates

McDonald takes on Ryan Vogelsong and his NL lowest ERA.

Facing a pitcher with a pedigree like Vogelsong, a 1-0 victory is about the best we can hope for.

Friday, July 06, 2012

Game 83: Giants at Pirates

Bedard and Zito at seven.

Finally the Bucs get to play a real MLB team. If the Bucs want a bigger first place lead, they really need to win this game.

Thursday, July 05, 2012

Game 82: Astros at Pirates

Karstens and Norris at seven.

If the Bucs want to retain sole possession of first place, they really need to win this game.

Wednesday, July 04, 2012

Game 81: Astros at Pirates

Keuchel and Correia in an hour.

Match rockets and sparklers line the battlements for post-game patriotic festivity.

The Pirates are at .550 and tied for first with the Reds. As good as they've been the last month, they'll have to play better. Tied with the hapless Reds? ... this will not do.

Sadly, there appear to be no photos of Sutton connecting for the beer fort wall. The photojournalists need to step up their game too.

Tuesday, July 03, 2012

Game 80: Astros at Pirates

Burnett goes for his 9th straight win against Harrell, a bunting threat.

If the Bucs want to win the division, they really need to win this game.

Monday, July 02, 2012

Game 79: Astros at Pirates

McDonald and Lyles at seven.

Bucs need a win if they want to increase their rapidly growing playoff odds. 83.2% are pretty good odds, but it'll be fun to watch that converge on 100%.

Sunday, July 01, 2012

Game 78: Pirates at Cardinals

Bedard and Westbrook today.

If Bedard fancies himself a starter in the Bucs' playoff rotation, he really needs to win this game.

Saturday, June 30, 2012

Game 77: Pirates at Cardinals

Karstens and Lynn today.

If Karstens fancies himself a starter in the Bucs' playoff rotation, he really needs to win this game.

Friday, June 29, 2012

Game 76: Pirates at Cardinals

Correia and Wainwright tonight.

If Correia fancies himself a starter in the Bucs' playoff rotation, he really needs to win this game.

Thursday, June 28, 2012

Game 75: Pirates at Phillies

Burnett and Kendrick in a day game.

If Burnett wants a statue outside of PNC, he really needs to win this game.

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Game 74: Pirates at Phillies

J-Mac and Raul Valdes at seven.

The Bucs need to win if they want a first round playoff bye.

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Game 73: Pirates at Phillies

Bedard and Worley at seven.

Most scenarios where the Bucs go deep into the playoffs involve a win tonight.

Monday, June 25, 2012

Game 72: Pirates at Phillies

K-Star returns to face Blanton and the hapless last-place Phils tonight.

Bucs are one game out and tied for the wild card lead.

Sunday, June 24, 2012

Game 71: Tigers at Pirates

Correia and Verlander starting soon.

If the Bucs are going to go deep in the playoffs, they need to regularly rest the starters like today with Tabata, Rowdy Rod Burrito and NFW on the bench. Cutch is playing, so the Bucs are still heavy favorites.

Saturday, June 23, 2012

Game 70: Tigers at Pirates

Lincoln and Scherzer at four.

Smells like first place.

Kevin Youkilis has never laid down a BUNT in his career. Not sure what message signing him would send. He could at least show the other Bucs how to shake up a bottle of champagne and spray it around the clubhouse.

Friday, June 22, 2012

Game 69: Tigers at Pirates

Burnett and Fister tonight in a possible World Series preview. Bucs just two games back.

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Game 68: Twins at Pirates

McDonald and Hendriks tonight.

Must win (or bunt) game if you care about the playoffs.

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

Game 67: Twins at Pirates

Bedard and Liriano tonight.

Bucs are 2.5 games out of first. For the first time in recent memory, the Win Meter, the Playoff Meter, and the Bunt Meter are all glowing various hues of green.

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Game 66: Twins at Pirates

Correia and Diamond tonight.

We'll be thoroughly entertained if Pedro hits three dingers.

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Game 65: Pirates at Indians

El Toro goes berserk as the Bucs win 9-5.

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Game 64: Pirates at Indians

Burnett and Jimenez starting soon.

Rumors about a possible Manny Ramirez acquisition have not been substantiated.

Friday, June 15, 2012

Game 63: Pirates at Indians

McDonald and Masterson today at four. Win meter turned off and back on.

Thursday, June 14, 2012

Game 62: Pirates at Orioles

Bedard and Hunter tonight. The Bucs need to get back to fundamentals, like bunting and defensive shifts.

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Game 61: Pirates at Orioles

Correia and Matusz tonight. Matusz is recovering from a serious bunting accident.

Game 60: Pirates at Orioles

Lincoln and Chen tonight in a likely World Series preview.

Sunday, June 10, 2012

First place

Nice view from up here.

Bucs have Monday off to prepare for the 1979 World Series rematch.

Game 59: Royals at Pirates

Burnett and Chen starting soon. Alvarez, Jones, and Tabata are all on the bench, stealing signs.

The Bucs are one game out. Playoff meter glows the hue of lush infield grass.

Saturday, June 09, 2012

Game 58: Royals at Pirates

Mazzaro and McDonald at 7:15.

Pirates are three games over .500 and two games out of first.

Boyz II Men playing after the game.

Friday, June 08, 2012

Game 57: Royals at Pirates

Bedard and Hochevar tonight. Two games back.

Thursday, June 07, 2012

Game 56: Pirates at Reds

Correia and Leake tonight with the playoffs on the line.

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

Game 55: Pirates at Reds

Lincoln and Cueto tonight, with the Bucs just two games out.

Bucco playoff odds holding steady around 77%.

Monday, June 04, 2012

Game 54: Pirates at Reds

Tomorrow, June 5. A.J. Burnett vs. Homer Bailey.

The Pirates are 27-26 and three games back of these 30-23 Reds.

Draft

Bucs draft Stanford RHP Mark Appel with the #8 pick, and HS OF Barrett Barnes with #45. In the late rounds, the Bucs should just draft the BBA - Best Bunter Available.

Sunday, June 03, 2012

Game 53: Pirates at Brewers

McDonald and Fiers on now. Bucs are down 2-0 in the first.

Saturday, June 02, 2012

Game 52: Pirates at Brewers

Bedard and Marcum tonight with the Bucs still three games back.

We will untuck.

Friday, June 01, 2012

Game 51: Pirates at Brewers

Correia and Wolf tonight with the Bucs three games back.

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Game 50: Reds at Pirates

Burnett and Cueto at seven usher in the Jordy Mercer Era.

Jordy was an accomplished bunter, but has been stone cold buntless in 2012.

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Game 49: Reds at Pirates

Morton and Bailey at seven.

The Bucs are just three games back and have won four in a row. Only Zoltan knows whether today's Assault will be on the Infield Grass or Outfield Walls, but either way, the playoff implications are substantial.

Monday, May 28, 2012

Game 48: Reds at Pirates

McDonald and Arroyo today.

The Bucs are four games behind the first-place Reds. Some Meaningful Bunting in late May could put the Bucs back at .500.

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Game 47: Cubs at Pirates

Bedard and Garza today. Remember all of the bunts that rolled foul.

Saturday, May 26, 2012

Game 46: Cubs at Pirates

Paul Maholm returns to PNC to face Correia and the Bucs' bunting juggernaut.

Meanwhile, ZOLTAN! closes the book on the Sam and Frodo Era.

Friday, May 25, 2012

Game 45: Cubs at Pirates

Burnett and Dempster tonight.

When looking for offensive help in the minors, it's hard not to notice Jo-Jo Reyes, currently leading Indy with three bunts.

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Game 44: Mets at Pirates

Morton and Niese in a daytime bunt-off.

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Game 43: Mets at Pirates

McDonald and Dickey tonight at seven. Bucs three games back.

Monday, May 21, 2012

Game 42: Mets at Pirates

Hairy Hands on to finish it. Bucs up 5-4, top of the ninth.

Not too far out of first place, too.

Sunday, May 20, 2012

Game 41: Pirates at Tigers

Correia and Scherzer starting now. Don Kelly and his .635 career OPS are leading off and playing CF for the Tigers.

Saturday, May 19, 2012

Game 40: Pirates at Tigers

Burnett and Smyly today. Bucs still four games back.

Game 39: Pirates at Tigers

Maddening loss. Three times a runner gets on base, and no attempt is made to advance those runners, 90 feet at a time, station to station, to, you know, HOME? This is not rocket science, Clint. No wonder some of the pitchers got demoralized and gave up runs.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Game 38: Pirates at Nationals

McDonald cruising in the fourth. Pirates up, 4-0.

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Game 36: Pirates at Marlins

Bucs lose. Outscored. Outbunted.

Monday, May 14, 2012

Game 35: Pirates at Marlins

Lincoln and Anibal Sanchez at seven.

Pretty amped up for this one. Beer fort in prime condition. Pirates are 16-18 and only four games back of the Cardinals.

Sunday, May 13, 2012

Game 34: Astros at Pirates

Wandy and A.J. still in the game. 6th inning, 1-1 tie.

Call your mothers.

Saturday, May 12, 2012

Game 33: Astros at Pirates

Happ and Morton at seven.

Friday, May 11, 2012

Game 32: Astros at Pirates

Bucs win on bunts, 1-0.

Thursday, May 10, 2012

Game 31: Nats at Pirates

Deer Hunter and the Nats have a 3-2 lead and it's the seventh inning.

Time to sharpen up those bunting bats and get after it.

Bunting is hard

Here's an interesting piece about how some teams not named the Pirates can't bunt their way out of a wet paper bag. It must be really hard to be a Dodgers or Mariners fan.

Hopefully someone will someday write a piece about how, in contrast, the Bucco BUNTing IGA (Infield Grass Assault) seems, through a combination of good luck and precise execution, hell-bent on playoff domination and another World Championship.

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Game 30: Nationals at Pirates

Bucs win again, 4-2. Game ball: McCutchen.

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Jackson and Burnett starting now.

Hoping to see Burnett lay down a bunt.

One day into the Pedro Alvarez Batting Cleanup Era, and the Bucs are undefeated.

Saturday, May 05, 2012

Game 27: Reds at Pirates

Bucs up 2-0 in the fifth on a two-run Walker jack. Pedro hitting cleanup.

Friday, May 04, 2012

Cueto and Correia at seven.

Frodo batting third. Beer Fort McKenry catching.

Thursday, May 03, 2012

Game 25: Pirates at Cardinals

Bedard and Westbrook in a day game.

For perhaps the first time the season, both the Win Meter and the Bunt Meter have fell oddly silent. Bucs need a win. Or at least a bunt.

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

Game 24: Pirates at Cardinals

The Bucs are spotting the Cardinals a nice lead in the first. Once the Cards are tired out from running around the bases, they'll be unable to field all the bunts.

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

Game 23: Pirates at Cardinals

Charlie the Bunt and Wainwright, just underway.

Monday, April 30, 2012

Game 22: Braves at Pirates

No bunts but magically the Braves have a 2-0 lead. F'n Braves.

Sunday, April 29, 2012

Game 21: Pirates at Braves

Correia has a perfect game in the fourth - two ABs, two bunts.

Saturday, April 28, 2012

Game 20: Pirates at Braves

Bucs have scored three runs for Bedard through three innings, and the Bucs lead 3-1. Bedard has apparently won back the respect of his teammates by laying down a nice BUNT.

Friday, April 27, 2012

Game 19: Pirates 1, Braves 1

Tie game, one bunt each.

Thursday, April 26, 2012

DeCastro

Steelers draft Stanford G David DeCastro in the first round. All hail this big, powerful-looking, big man!

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Games 17 and 18: Rockies at Pirates

Pirates to practice hitting balls in the sun and bouncing them off the foul pole in today's doubleheader.

Monday, April 23, 2012

Game 16: Rockies at Pirates

The Bucs take a day off to prepare against Jamie Moyer.

Will Moyer be a consummate professional and go about his business like he does day in and day out? After the game, what will Jim Tracy ask himself?

Sunday, April 22, 2012

Game 15: Cardinals at Pirates

Bedard and Lohse starting soon. Barmes at .095 has cleared the LaRussa Line, and all the designated drivers are on the bench.

Westbrook and Burnett at seven.

Pirates umbrella day at the park.

Friday, April 20, 2012

Game 13: Cardinals at Pirates

Pirates return from the west coast rested and ready to kick some BUNT.

Lynn and Uber Bunter Morton to start. Pretty soon.

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

Game 12: Pirates at Diamondbacks

Bucs won the day game one BUNT to none.

It has been brought to our attention that Pedro Alvarez now has more home runs than Albert Pujols.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Game 11: Pirates at Diamondbacks

Karstens and Kubel. Game on now, 1-1.

Barajas (.083) just over the legal limit. As expected Alvarez (.050) on as DD tonight.

Bedard and Saunders starting now.

Rod Barajas (.050) returns as designated driver.

Sunday, April 15, 2012

Correia and Vogelsong.

Refurbished win meter plugged back in and purring quietly.

Saturday, April 14, 2012

Game 8: Pirates at Giants

2011 Bunting Champion Charlie Morton returns to face Barry Zito.

Half of the Bucs starting position players have batting averages lower than Coonelly's BAC (after a holiday party).

Friday, April 13, 2012

Game 7: Pirates at Giants

Pirates down 2-0 in the sixth.

Had to unplug the win meter. Something's not right with it.

The early start will leave extra time after the game for re-enacting the bunt-off win on the lawn outside the beer fort.

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Game 6: Pirates at Dodgers

Karstens and Capuano, with the Bucs down 3-0 in the third. Yamaico Navarro is playing LF and batting fifth.

Win meter making a soft, almost whining noise.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Starting now. Bedard and Billingsley.

Win meter making a loud, almost shrieking noise.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Game 4: Pirates at Dodgers

Correia and Kershaw starting soon. Pirates looking for a bunt-off win.

Monday, April 09, 2012

HW 2012 Readers' Poll

A few days late with this, and the Bucs are already on pace to bunt to 108 wins, but it's time to prognosticate:

1. How many Bucco wins?
2. Most bunts?
3. Other predictions?

I'll start:
1. 83 wins. Finally.
2. Morton, again.
3. Bucs clinch wild-card same day Cutch bunts for the cycle.

Sunday, April 08, 2012

Game 3: Phillies at Pirates

Worley and McDonald at one thirty.

I did an LED upgrade on the win meter. Now it's even prettier.

Saturday, April 07, 2012

Game 2: Phillies at Pirates

Lee and Karstens at seven.

Pirates still looking for their first bunt of the year.

Thursday, April 05, 2012

Game 1: Phillies at Pirates

Halladay and Bedard at 1:35pm.

Win meter warmly glowing, emitting a low hum.

Friday, March 30, 2012

Warm up the win meter

A week out from real baseball and honest bunty goodness, the Bucs open with a 72.7% chance of winning the division.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Preseason: Pirates at Yankees

In tonight's World Series preview, I expect to see me some good bunting.

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Preseason: Pirates at Orioles

McDonald and Arrieta in 1979 World Series rematch at one.

Monday, March 12, 2012

Preseason: Phillies at Pirates

Morton and Worley at one.

Worley is no stranger to protective eyewear and seems determined to not bunt his eye out.

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Preseason: Pirates at Devil Rays

Correia and Niemann at one.

It's nice to see the Bucs driving the ball, but I don't see how that prepares them for winning real games if players can't move runners from station to station.

Saturday, March 10, 2012

Preseason: Twins at Pirates

Bedard and Doyle starting now. Barajas batting cleanup.

Original Bunter

Ten days late with this, but happy belated birthday to Dickey Pearce, the inventor of the "tricky hit".

Friday, March 09, 2012

Preseason: Pirates at Red Sox

NRI Shairon Martis and Buchholz at seven.

Wednesday, March 07, 2012

Bunting eyepatches?

After thinking this through, it seems that a batter would be much more likely to bunt out the eye closest to the field (e.g. the left eye for a RHP), so a facemask might be overkill. Instead, a simple protective eyepatch should get the job done, and plays into the whole Pirate theme. The online options are numerous.

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Bunting facemasks?

With so much invested in McCutchen now, the Bucs should consider some form of protective headgear for the bunting. For example, in obvious bunting situations, McCutchen, the pitchers, or whoever could bunt wearing a catcher's mask. This could provide extra strategic options for Clint - for example, sending McCutchen to bat in an obvious bunting situation wearing the mask, only to have him swing away, belting one into the river.

Six more years

McCutchen extended. Win Meter warm to the touch.

Sunday, March 04, 2012

Lincoln wins, does not bunt eye out

Let's not let the Burnett mishap overshadow the Joy of Brad Lincoln, 2012 Bunting Champion.

Thursday, March 01, 2012

Bunting is hard

This is why we can't get too excited when players step up from the AL to the NL Central.

Other reports indicate that Burnett will need surgery to repair the damage. I trust he will return a better and stronger bunter, and perhaps this will help push Burnett to bunting level: Kris Benson.

Get well, AJ.

Friday, February 24, 2012

Beer fort on wheels

Kids, if you're going to try this at home, please try the less dangerous unmotorized options.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Joyous bunting

Prepare for joy, the P-G reports:

"It's going to be a fresh start, it's going to be fun," Burnett said Monday outside of the Pirates spring training facility, his first day in black and yellow after he was acquired from the New York Yankees. "Coming back to the National League where I can hit and bunt. Get the joy back into the game."

Monday, February 20, 2012

Pitchers and catchers

Eleven days to practice the most exciting play in all of professional sports, and then the Blue Jays on March 3.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Dmitri Young

What could possibly be worse than not getting the BUNT down? Injuring yourself trying to get the BUNT down. Well played, Neal.

Monday, February 13, 2012

AJ Burnett

Knows how to BUNT to victory.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

How to BUNT

Time to start thinking about the important stuff.

Playoffs

So far this New Year feels just like any other, where the Steelers and Bucs both win championships.
